The Corridor

Milwaukee was once known as the “machine shop of the world.” One of the areas in Milwaukee with the most prodigious manufacturing output and history is known as the 30th Street Corridor. Manufacturing giants such as Harley Davidson, A.O. Smith & Master Lock, among others, were founded in the Corridor, which consists of 880 acres of industrial infrastructure located on the city’s northwest side. It extends along a 6.2 mile track of the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul Railway, with access to the Milwaukee Port on Lake Michigan, and tracks to the eastern seaboard for national and international manufacturing and trade.

Neighborhood Revitalization

The 30th Street Industrial Corridor is uniquely surrounded by a residential area. Because of the availability of high paying manufacturing jobs, during the "great migration" tens of thousands of Blacks moved to Milwaukee to work in the Corridor. Housing was built around these factories, and prosperous, blue-collar middle class Black neighborhoods were born. However, with the closing of these factories, the area currently faces challenges which include the redevelopment of large swaths of industrial land and buildings, along with poverty, unemployment and crime. It will take a comprehensive approach to revitalize this area, "Industry and Community Together."

Equitable Development

The 30th Street Industrial Corridor has scores of vacant and underutilized industrial buildings, including over 75 contiguous acres of land that once held the massive A.O. Smith campus. There are also hundreds of homes in need of repair. We are determined that the redevelopment of the area benefits the most valuable and abundant resource in the Corridor, the people that live there.
